Hilo has had a long and globally significant history of tsunamis. Over the last 100 years, Hilo has experienced multiple significant tsunamis, including three Pacific-wide events in 1946, 1950, and 1960, as well as one locally generated event in 1975. As a result of these devastating events and the knowledge gained from them, the United States established official tsunami warning capabilities in 1949. In 1968, the Pacific Tsunami Warning System was established across the Pacific.
