Monster Waves!

Hilo's Tsunami History and
How It Is Saving the Lives Today

Hilo has had a long and globally significant history of tsunamis. Over the last 100 years, Hilo has experienced multiple significant tsunamis, including three Pacific-wide events in 1946, 1950, and 1960, as well as one locally generated event in 1975. As a result of these devastating events and the knowledge gained from them, the United States established official tsunami warning capabilities in 1949. In 1968, the Pacific Tsunami Warning System was established across the Pacific. If you would like to learn more about Hilo and tsunamis while you are here, we suggest you visit The Lyman Museum and/or The Tsunami Museum. You can also find many great books about it at the local Hilo bookstore, Basically Books. The following flier was created by our daughter, Jovie, to help our guests learn more about Hilo and tsunamis. Below the flier are links for NOAA's Pacific Tsunami Warning Center and Hawaii's Civil Defense, as well as a link where you can sign up for warnings.
